A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skilful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner and loser can be defined by objective means. Generally speaking, a sport is a game based in physical athleticism. Activities such as board games and card games are sometimes classified as "mind sports," but strictly speaking "sport" by itself refers to some physical activity. Non-competitive activities may also qualify, for example though jogging or playing catch are usually classified as forms of recreation, they may also be informally called "sports" due to their similarity to competitive games.

Sports are governed by a set of rules or customs. Physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. However, the degree of skill and performance in some sports such as diving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to well-defined criteria. This is in contrast with other judged activities such as beauty pageants and body building, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined.

Records are kept and updated for most sports at the highest levels, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news. Sports are most often played just for fun or for the simple fact that people need exercise to stay in good physical condition. However, professional sport is a major source of entertainment.

While practices may vary, sports participants are expected to display good sportsmanship, and observe standards of conduct such as being respectful of opponents and officials, and congratulating the winner when losing.

Etymology and meaning

"Sport" comes from the Old French ''desport'' meaning "leisure". American English uses the term "sports" to refer to this general type of recreational activity, whereas other regional dialects use the singular "sport". The French word for sport is based on the Persian word ''bord'', meaning "winning" or "win". The Chinese term for sport, ''tiyu'' (体育; 體育) connotes physical training. The modern Greek term for sport is Αθλητισμός (''athlitismos''), directly cognate with the English terms "athlete" and "athleticism".

The oldest definition of ''sport'' in English (1300) is of anything humans find amusing or entertaining. Other meanings include gambling and events staged for the purpose of gambling; hunting; and games and diversions, including ones that require exercise. Roget's defines the noun sport as an "activity engaged in for relaxation and amusement" with synonyms including diversion and recreation.

History

There are artifacts and structures that suggest that the Chinese engaged in sporting activities as early as 2000 BC. Gymnastics appears to have been a popular sport in China's ancient past. Monuments to the Pharaohs indicate that a number of sports, including swimming and fishing, were well-developed and regulated several thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt. Other Egyptian sports included javelin throwing, high jump, and wrestling. Ancient Persian sports such as the traditional Iranian martial art of Zourkhaneh had a close connection to the warfare skills. Among other sports that originate in ancient Persia are polo and jousting.

A wide range of sports were already established by the time of Ancient Greece and the military culture and the development of sports in Greece influenced one another considerably. Sports became such a prominent part of their culture that the Greeks created the Olympic Games, which in ancient times were held every four years in a small village in the Peloponnesus called Olympia.

Sports have been increasingly organized and regulated from the time of the ancient Olympics up to the present century. Industrialization has brought increased leisure time to the citizens of developed and developing countries, leading to more time for citizens to attend and follow spectator sports, greater participation in athletic activities, and increased accessibility. These trends continued with the advent of mass media and global communication. Professionalism became prevalent, further adding to the increase in sport's popularity, as sports fans began following the exploits of professional athletes through radio, television, and the internet—all while enjoying the exercise and competition associated with amateur participation in sports.

In the New Millennium, new sports have been going further from the physical aspect to the mental or psychological aspect of competing. Electronic sports organizations are becoming more and more popular.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is an attitude that strives for fair play, courtesy toward teammates and opponents, ethical behaviour and integrity, and grace in victory or defeat.

Sportsmanship expresses an aspiration or ethos that the activity will be enjoyed for its own sake. The well-known sentiment by sports journalist Grantland Rice, that it's “not that you won or lost but how you played the game", and the modern Olympic creed expressed by its founder Pierre de Coubertin: "The most important thing... is not winning but taking part" are typical expressions of this sentiment.

Violence in sports involves crossing the line between fair competition and intentional aggressive violence. Athletes, coaches, fans, and parents sometimes unleash violent behaviour on people or property, in misguided shows of loyalty, dominance, anger, or celebration. Rioting or hooliganism are common and ongoing problems at national and international sporting contests.

Professional sports

The aspect of sports, together with the increase of mass media and leisure time, has led to "professionalism" in sports. This has resulted in some conflict, where the paycheck are more important than recreational aspects, or where the sports are changed simply to make them more profitable and popular, thereby losing certain valued traditions. Indeed, since sport by definition is a leisure activity, "professional sport" does not and cannot exist. However the term is commonplace and accepted to mean a game or other activity, regarded by the general population as sport, which is performed by persons for reward with the intent to entertain spectators. The entertainment aspect also means that sportsmen and women are often elevated to celebrity status in media and popular culture. For this reason, many journalists have suggested that sports should not be reported by the general media but only by specialist magazines.

Politics

Sports and politics can influence each other greatly.

When apartheid was the official policy in South Africa, many sports people, particularly in rugby union, adopted the conscientious approach that they should not appear in competitive sports there. Some feel this was an effective contribution to the eventual demolition of the policy of apartheid, others feel that it may have prolonged and reinforced its worst effects.

The 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin was an illustration, perhaps best recognised in retrospect, where an ideology was developing which used the event to strengthen its spread through propaganda.

In the history of Ireland, Gaelic sports were connected with cultural nationalism. Until the mid 20th century a person could have been banned from playing Gaelic football, hurling, or other sports administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) if she/he played or supported football, or other games seen to be of British origin. Until recently the GAA continued to ban the playing of football and rugby union at Gaelic venues. This ban is still enforced, but was modified to allow football and rugby to be played in Croke Park while Lansdowne Road was redeveloped into Aviva Stadium. Until recently, under Rule 21, the GAA also banned members of the British security forces and members of the RUC from playing Gaelic games, but the advent of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 led to the eventual removal of the ban.

Nationalism is often evident in the pursuit of sports, or in its reporting: people compete in national teams, or commentators and audiences can adopt a partisan view. On occasion, such tensions can lead to violent confrontation among players or spectators within and beyond the sporting venue, as in the Football War. These trends are seen by many as contrary to the fundamental ethos of sports being carried on for its own sake and for the enjoyment of its participants.

Physical art

Sports have many affinities with art. For example, figure skating, drum corps, skateboarding, artistic gymnastics, dancesport, and Tai chi can be considered artistic spectacles. Similarly, there are other activities that have elements of sport and art in their execution, such as bodybuilding, free running, martial arts, professional wrestling, performance art, yoga, dressage, and culinary arts. Perhaps the best example is bull-fighting, which in Spain is reported in the arts pages of newspapers.

All sports involve physical and mental activities that are pursued for more than simply utilitarian reasons. For instance, running, when done as a sport, occurs for reasons beyond simply moving from one place to another. Value is gained from this activity when it is conducted simply for its own sake. This is similar to the concept of aesthetic value, which is seeing something over and above the strictly functional value coming from an object's normal use. For instance, an aesthetically pleasing car is one which doesn't just get from A to B, but which impresses with its grace, poise, and charisma. In the same way, a sporting performance such as jumping doesn't just impress as being an effective way to avoid obstacles. It impresses because of the ability, skill, and style that is demonstrated in its performance.

Art and sports were clearly linked at the time of Ancient Greece, when gymnastics and calisthenics invoked admiration and aesthetic appreciation for the physical build, prowess and ''arete'' displayed by participants. The modern term ''art'' as skill, is related to this ancient Greek term ''arete''. The closeness of art and sport in these times was revealed by the nature of the Olympic Games, which were celebrations of both sporting and artistic achievements, poetry, sculpture and architectures.

Technology

Technology has an important role in sports, whether applied to an athlete's health, the athlete's technique, or equipment's characteristics.

As sports have grown more competitive, the need for better and fancier equipment has arisen. Such as Golf clubs, bicycles, American footballs and helmets, tennis rackets, baseball and cricket bats, hockey skates.

Ranging from nutrition to the treatment of injuries, as the knowledge of the human body has deepened over time, an athlete's potential has been increased. Athletes are now able to play to an older age, recover more quickly from injuries, and train more effectively than previous generations of athletes.

Advancing technology created new opportunities for research into sports. It is now possible to analyze aspects of sports that were previously out of the reach of comprehension. Being able to use motion capture to capture an athlete's movement, or advanced computer simulations to model physical scenarios has greatly increased an athlete's ability to understand what they are doing and how they can improve themselves.

Terminology

In British English, sporting activities are commonly denoted by the mass noun "sport". In American English, "sports" is more used. In all English dialects, "sports" is the term used for more than one specific sport. For example, "football and swimming are my favourite sports", would sound natural to all English speakers, whereas "I enjoy sport" would sound less natural than "I enjoy sports" to North Americans.

The term "sport" is sometimes extended to encompass all competitive activities, regardless of the level of physical activity. Both games of skill and motor sport exhibit many of the characteristics of physical sports, such as skill, sportsmanship, and at the highest levels, even professional sponsorship associated with physical sports. Air sports, billiards, bridge, chess, motorcycle racing, and powerboating are all recognized as sports by the International Olympic Committee with their world governing bodies represented in the Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations.

Highly recognized definition of "sport" on EU level is established by the Council of Europe: "all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels.

Grassroots sport

Grassroots sport is a popular phrase which is used in most of the articles about sport and sport for all. Czech Sports Association defines Grassroots sport as synergy of population active in "sport", sport organisations on the most basic level, essential infrastructure and suitable environment, where the main driving force is joy of "sport" itself. Spectator sport

As well as being a form of recreation for the participants, much sport is played in front of an audience. Most professional sport is played in a theatre of some kind; be it a stadium, arena, golf course, race track, or the open road, with provision for the (often paying) public. Large television or radio audiences are also commonly attracted, with rival broadcasters bidding large amounts of money for the rights to show certain fixtures. The football World Cup attracts a global television audience of hundreds of millions; the 2006 final alone attracted an estimated worldwide audience of well over 700 million. The Cricket World Cup is another sporting event which attracts a global audience. The 2007 Cricket World Cup attracted about 2.3 Billion viewers all over the world. In the United States, the championship game of the NFL, the Super Bowl, has become one of the most watched television broadcasts of the year. Super Bowl Sunday is a ''de facto'' national holiday in America; the viewership being so great that in 2007 advertising space was reported as being sold at $2.6m for a 30 second slot.

The biggest risk for youth sports is the increased risk of injury, including concussions and gym class injuries.

Gender and sports opportunities

The rise of organized sports opportunities for girls has increased dramatically since the passage of Title IX in 1972. The number of female participants continues to rise as variables such as opportunity for involvement, valuing of sports as part of total development and overall fitness for girls and women has increased.

Despite the tremendous gains in sports participation made by girls and women during the last 30 years, there is still a persistent gap in the enrollment figures between males and females. The participation of girls is currently only 39% of the total participation in interscholastic athletics. There has been a slow but steady climb toward gender balance in the percent of female participants, from 32% of the males’ participation in 1973–74 to 63% in 1994–95. Hessel (2000).

Neil Warnock (born 1 December 1948), is an English former professional footballer who is currently manager of English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers.

His professional playing career started with Chesterfield in 1967, before moving on to clubs including Rotherham United, Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Aldershot, Barnsley, York City and Crewe Alexandra before retiring as a player in 1979.

Since becoming a manager in 1980 he has managed several English football league clubs including Huddersfield Town, Notts County, Plymouth Argyle, Crystal Palace and, most successfully, an eight-year spell at Sheffield United.

Playing career

Warnock played for Chesterfield, Rotherham United, Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Aldershot, Barnsley, York City and Crewe Alexandra, making a total of 326 league appearances in an eleven-year playing career. At Hartlepool he won the club's Player of the Season award in 1972.

Managerial career

Non-League

After being involved in Sunday League coaching his first full managerial job was with Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity in 1981. Following this he managed Burton Albion and Scarborough. At Scarborough he and Paul Evans, his assistant, won the Football Conference title in 1987, making them the first team to win automatic promotion to the Football League following the abolition of the re-election system.

With Mick Jones

He had earlier spent time as a coach at Peterborough United, where he met Posh assistant boss Mick Jones, who would become his own long-time assistant. Warnock then became manager of Notts County with Jones as his assistant. Warnock's assistant at Scarborough Paul Evans and ex-Scarborough physio Dave Wilson also joined the backroom staff, and the pair achieved successive promotions to get County into the top flight in 1991 (with Warnock turning down lucrative offers to manage Chelsea and Sunderland during this time), before Warnock left in the 1992–93 after County's relegation had cost them a place in the new Premier League.

In March 1993 he took over as 'consultant' at Torquay United, saving the club from relegation from the Football League. Warnock resumed his partnership with Jones, Evans and Wilson at Huddersfield Town, his appointment coming in July 1993.

Huddersfield Town

Warnock was quick to inject new blood into the Terriers' side, snapping up 'keeper Steve Francis, Darren Bullock, Ronnie Jepson, Tom Cowan and Pat Scully during his first season, all of whom would go on to become mainstays in the 1994/95 promotion season. He also showed faith in Centre of Excellence products such as Chris Billy, Simon Baldry and Andy Booth – a player then struggling to make the breakthrough who would go on to become a club legend in modern times. Despite these acquisitions Town struggled for most of the 1993/94 season, their last at Leeds Road, and Warnock was quick to offload fan favourites Iwan Roberts, Iffy Onoura and Chris Marsden while introducing a more direct style of play. He also didn't enjoy the best of relationships with cult hero Phil Starbuck.

The run to the final of the Autoglass Trophy coincided with an upturn in league form and a mass optimism further bolstered by the move to the new Alfred McAlpine Stadium for the 1994/95 season. Warnock's side won the Yorkshire Electricity Cup in late 1994. Warnock's side were genuine contenders for automatic promotion until falling away in the final few games to finish 5th (the final Play-Off spot that season owing to league re-structuring). They triumphed on penalties over 2nd-placed Brentford after two thrilling ties and went on to beat Bristol Rovers at Wembley.

He quit Huddersfield just days after their promotion, but made a swift and surprising return to management at Plymouth Argyle, which had just been relegated to Division Three.

Plymouth Argyle

In his first season as manager of Plymouth Argyle, Warnock took the club to Division Three play-off glory after finishing 4th in the league. The play-off semi-final was a memorable affair - Argyle played Colchester United and were 1–0 down from the 1st leg, but won 3–1 at Home Park in the 2nd leg. During this game, Warnock was sent off from the dug-out. Warnock responded to this by jumping into the crowd to watch the remainder of the match with the Argyle supporters.

The final was the first match that the club had played at Wembley Stadium. A header from Ronnie Mauge on 65 minutes gave Argyle a 1–0 win over Darlington and promotion to Division Two.

In February 1997, Warnock was surprisingly sacked as Argyle manager despite his popularity with the supporters.

Going it alone

Following his successful period as manager of Plymouth Argyle, Warnock rounded out the 1990s with Oldham Athletic and Bury.

Sheffield United

He was appointed as manager of his boyhood club Sheffield United on 2 December 1999. In 2002–03, Warnock led Sheffield United to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and League Cup only to lose to Liverpool and Arsenal respectively, as well as the First Division play-off final, with the Blades beaten 3–0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers. This was the first time in his management career that he had lost a play-off contest, as he had achieved four promotions via the playoffs in the 1990s.

In 2005 Jones resumed the partnership by taking up the assistant's post at Bramall Lane, and at the end of the 2005–06 season the club were promoted to the Premiership as runners-up in The Championship.

The Blades performed well in their expected relegation battle, and for a long time looked to be heading for survival. However a turning point in the season occurred with victories for both West Ham and Wigan on the final day of the season, condemning Warnock's side to relegation. Warnock claimed in his autobiography that minutes after the final game of the season, actor and Blades fan Sean Bean burst into his office, blaming Warnock for the team's relegation in a "foul-mouthed tirade" while Warnock's wife and daughter were present. Bean denied this, calling Warnock "bitter" and "hypocritical", and arguing that he would never use such language in front of another man's wife and children. Warnock resigned from the club following relegation to take some time out of football.

A major factor that caused Sheffield United's relegation was that Fulham beat Liverpool in the penultimate game of the season. Liverpool rested many first team players (due to the fact Liverpool had a Champions League final to look forward to) and consequently lost 1–0. Liverpool started the day in fourth place and finished the league a week later in third place.

Warnock was frustrated that Liverpool played a weaker team, because it did not give the teams in the relegation battle an equal chance of survival.

Crystal Palace

He spoke to Milan Mandarić about the vacant managerial role at Leicester City in the summer, but was never handed the job. Simon Jordan spoke to Warnock about taking over at Crystal Palace following the sacking of Peter Taylor and, after initially not being keen over the job, he returned to football management with Palace on 11 October 2007. Having his personal friend Simon Jordan as Owner and Chairman was certainly a help in him getting the job. Jones returned from his own sabbatical to join Warnock's team as assistant. Under Warnock and Jones Palace made a massive turn-around, moving from relegation battlers to promotion contenders in the space of six months, with Warnock's use of youngsters a major factor in the improved performances and results. Palace made the play-offs in the end, but were beaten at the semi-final stage by Bristol City, who went on to lose to Hull City in the final.

Warnock stayed on for the 2008–09 season, but on taking the job a year earlier he had made it clear that the Crystal Palace job would be his last managerial role in football, with the club's finances beginning the take a turn for the worse. The 2009–10 season saw Palace perform well despite being heavily restricted by the club's poor financial position, which resulted in the club being placed in administration late in January. A 10-point deduction was imposed by the Football League for this. Crystal Palace's administrator commented that Warnock was 'let go' after telling the administrator he did not have the stomach for the fight to save the club.

Queens Park Rangers

On 1 March 2010 Warnock joined Queens Park Rangers as manager on a three-and-a-half year deal after agreeing compensation with Crystal Palace. His first match in charge was an emphatic 3–1 home win against West Bromwich Albion.

He helped QPR comfortably avoid relegation in 2009-10 – including a 2–0 win against former club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Warnock was awarded Manager of the Month for August 2010. Using a new 4–2–3–1 formation built around playmaker Adel Taarabt who went on win the Football League Championship Player of the Year 2011. QPR topped the table for the majority of the 2010-11 season and On 30 April 2011 were promoted as Championship champions after a 2-0 win over Watford.

Disputes

Warnock, who is qualified as a referee, but has never officiated at the very top level, is renowned for his outbursts, which some see as controversial

Players

Stéphane Henchoz – Over an alleged spitting incident in the League Cup semi-final between Sheffield United and Liverpool.

Peter Swan – A player for Warnock at Argyle and Bury, he called Warnock "a prick".

Stephen Hunt – After a match against Reading Warnock condemned the behaviour of the Royals' Stephen Hunt. He is said to have commented: "Hunt has proved on a few occasions that he's a clever type, and his challenge on Nick Montgomery earlier in the game wasn't clever either". He also said he looked like he shouldn't be holding a pint.

Michael Johnson – In a 2005–06 Championship game with Derby County, Warnock reacted to a challenge by Johnson on Paul Ifill and was accused of playing a part in getting the opposition player sent off. This led to a face to face confrontation between the two and the Derby fans were incensed by Warnock's actions. Warnock asserted that the tackle was a bad one and that his reaction had made no difference to the outcome.

Shefki Kuqi – During a 2007–08 Championship game with Wolves, Kuqi was spotted gesturing at Palace fans whilst being substituted. As a result the Finnish international was transfer-listed and fined two weeks' wages, with Warnock stating "I will be transfer-listing him immediately. I don't accept things like that, so that is the end of the matter." However it was not, as Kuqi would return the following season after an injury crisis and would gain popularity with some Palace fans, despite again upsetting them by refusing to lower his wage demands at the end of his contract and subsequently leaving the club.

El Hadji Diouf - As manager of QPR, Warnock criticized Diouf for his behavior after a challenge between QPR's Jamie Mackie and Blackburn's Gael Givet left Mackie with a double fracture in his leg: "For many years I have thought [Diouf] was the gutter type - I was going to call him a sewer rat but that might be insulting to sewer rats. [...] I hope he goes abroad because I won't miss watching him. He is a nasty little person."

Stan Ternent – A longstanding feud. Most recently in 2001, when Ternent accused Warnock of sending his then assistant manager Kevin Blackwell to listen to his half time teamtalk . Mick Jones – A long-term assistant to Warnock, the pair did not speak for several years after Jones opted to remain at Plymouth Argyle as manager after Warnock was sacked, rather than follow him to Oldham Athletic. The pair reunited as a managerial partnership again in 2005 at Sheffield United and achieved promotion in their first season back together, and are now both at Queens Park Rangers. Joe Kinnear – Kinnear remarked that Warnock was a 'prat' after a 1–1 draw between Sheffield United and Kinnear's Nottingham Forest in 2004–05. Kevin Blackwell – Warnock told the press that he wished he'd had the money to spend on players that Blackwell had in the season 2004–2005. Blackwell had previously been Warnock's assistant at Sheffield United for several years and indeed Warnock had helped Blackwell out for years, working with him at Scarborough, Huddersfield, Torquay, Plymouth et al. Another dispute occurred on 18 April 2006 in a match between Leeds United and Sheffield United at Bramall Lane when Warnock was sent from the touch-line after making a comment to Blackwell over a tackle by Gary Kelly on a Sheffield United player that Warnock deemed a bookable offence, and would have resulted in the Leeds player being sent off. Nigel Worthington – on 18 March 2006 Worthington apparently refused to shake hands with Warnock resulting in Warnock sticking two fingers up at him, an incident over which the FA charged Warnock with improper conduct. Wally Downes – On 20 January 2007, in a match against Reading, Keith Gillespie was sent off seconds after he came on to the pitch, for swiping Reading's Stephen Hunt in the face. After a protracted departure from the pitch, Warnock performed a stamping motion on the sideline directed towards referee Mark Halsey – referring to an earlier tackle made by Steve Sidwell which Warnock felt warranted a red card as well. Reading coach Wally Downes took exception to his actions, and pushed Warnock, causing a mass brawl on the sidelines. Both Warnock and Downes were sent to the stands as a result. Later Wally Downes admitted a misconduct charge to the FA, was fined £2,000 and given a one-match touchline ban, but it did earn Downes a chant with the Reading fans referring to his attack on Warnock. Gareth Southgate – Accused Southgate on Sky Sports News (shown 19 March 2007) of fielding a weaker starting XI against relegation-threatened Manchester City. Warnock claimed Southgate was "helping out" a friend, City manager Stuart Pearce.

Referees

Jim Rushton – Warnock, whilst manager of Huddersfield Town, was known to dislike Rushton. Huddersfield played Lincoln City in the FA Cup and Warnock was disappointed with Lee Sinnott and someone being carded and wasn't happy when he find out that Rushton was to referee a league game between the same two sides and Warnock asked for him to be switched as it would give Lincoln "an unfair advantage". Before the game Rushton said to Warnock that he knew he had wanted him switched. During the game Warnock was sent off for a "non-violent push" on the linesman. Rushton also refereed the Autoglass Trophy Final in 1994 between Swansea City and Huddersfield. Huddersfield lost 4–1 on penalties.

David Elleray – Warnock called him a "bald-headed bloke", whilst criticizing his decision making ability. Graham Poll – Following what Warnock believed to be a mistake by Poll which led to Arsenal scoring in the FA Cup semi-final in 2003. In a Sky Sports documentary, Warnock agreed to be filmed in a personal documentary about his life on and off the pitch. During a match at home to Ipswich Town, Warnock was seen to swear at and verbally abuse one of the assistant referees (also telling the then Ipswich manager that the assistant 'had been his best player'), perhaps revealing why Warnock is seen as one of the more controversial football managers in England. Richard Beeby – Warnock heavily criticised Beeby in February 2008 after he played on for longer than the designated added time at the end of a match between Bristol City and Palace at Ashton Gate, which led to Bristol City equalising 25 seconds after full-time should have been blown, even claiming Beeby celebrated City's equaliser. Warnock was subsequently charged with "improper conduct" by the FA. In response, he "admitted the charge and requested a personal hearing". Warnock was subsequently fined £2,000. Rob Shoebridge – Warnock heavily criticised Rob Shoebridge and his officials after another disputed incident at Ashton Gate, when Freddie Sears gave Palace what they thought was an early lead. However Sears' effort rebounded back off of the stanchion at the back of the goal and out of it, leading to Shoebridge and his assistants signalling a goal-kick. Palace were then beaten in the penultimate minute of the game, and Warnock claimed that his side had been "cheated" out of a result.

Fans

Leicester City – When Leicester restructured their debt after going into administration in 2002, enabling them to hold on to a string of Premiership stars who ordinarily would have been sold to stay afloat, they gained promotion to the Premiership, at the expense of Sheffield United, who had to make do with a play-off place. After United failed to gain promotion Warnock revealed his anger at the Leicester situation. Incensed that City could have got into such a state yet continued to compete at the top of the table, with no punishment, Warnock complained to the press, claiming United should have Leicester's place in the Premiership and the club should have been relegated or booted out the League. Any team now going into administration is automatically deducted 10 points, although even with this punishment Leicester would still have been two points clear of United, albeit with a far stronger team as a result of the move into administration. He added further problems between Leicester fans and himself on 15 July 2010. Warnock told the Ealing Gazette that Leicester were not as big as his current club, Queens Park Rangers.

Sean Bean – In a recent tabloid serialisation of Warnock's autobiography, "Made In Sheffield", Warnock claims that minutes after the final game of the 2006–07 season Bean burst into his office, blaming Warnock for the team's relegation in a "foul-mouthed tirade" while Warnock's wife and daughter were present. Bean denied this, calling Warnock "bitter" and "hypocritical", and arguing that he would never use such language in front of another man's wife and children.

Bury – Warnock's reputation started poorly with Bury fans and finally was destroyed when he was seen wearing a Sheffield Utd tie for an interview at Gigg Lane prior to a match against them. He had the accolade of receiving abuse from the whole stadium when Bury played away to Oldham Athletic where he was held in similar regard.

Chairmen & directors

Warnock is also critical in the autobiography of several of the chairmen and directors he worked with during his career. The most notable were Derek Pavis (Notts County), Dan McCauley (Plymouth Argyle), Terry Fisher (Huddersfield Town), and Ken Marsden (Gainsborough Trinity). However, Warnock insists in the same publication that he now gets on well with all of them.

Personal life

Warnock has been a lifelong supporter of Sheffield United. He is married to Sharon and has four children, Natalie, James, Amy and William. , he lived in Richmond, London and had a home in Cornwall.

He has published two books, ''Neil Warnock's Wembley Way: The Manager's Inside Story'' with Rick Cowdery in 1996, which recalls Plymouth Argyle's Third Division play-off final win in the same year, and ''Made in Sheffield: Neil Warnock – My Story'', his autobiography, published in 2007.

Greg Inglis (born 15 January 1987 in Kempsey, New South Wales) is an Australian professional rugby league player for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. A Queensland State of Origin and Australian international representative outside back, Inglis joined the Rabbitohs in 2011 after much controversy.

Inglis is a versatile back, having played in several positions during his career. He originally played on the wing or in the centres. He even played at fullback when Billy Slater was unavailable. Between 2007 and early 2009 he played at five-eighth for the Melbourne Storm before he switched to centre when Brett Finch arrived at the Storm, where he played for the remainder of his time at the club until the end of 2010. Inglis' representative matches for Queensland and Australia have been as a winger or centre.

In November 2009, Inglis won the highly coveted Golden Boot Award as the world's best player – presented to him by ''Rugby League World'' magazine, becoming the third consecutive Storm player to win it, after Cameron Smith (2007) and Billy Slater (2008).

His cousins are Albert Kelly of the Cronulla Sharks, Beau Champion of the Melbourne Storm and Preston Campbell of the Gold Coast Titans.

Rugby League career

Early years

Inglis began playing rugby league at a very young age with his cousin Michael Hohaia for the Bowraville Tigers in New South Wales. At only 15 years old, after being seen playing at a junior carnival on the NSW North Coast, Inglis signed his first professional contract with the Melbourne Storm but actually played his first senior game at 16 for Newcastle Hunter in New South Wales. While in Year 11 at Brisbane's Wavell State High School, Inglis played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2004 and was already attracting media attention as an NRL star of the future. He played his first under 18s game for the Brisbane Wombats in 2004. Before the end of the 2004 season the Storm had added Inglis to their full-time playing roster for the following year.

Melbourne Storm

2005: NRL debut

Inglis played for Melbourne during 2005's pre-season in a trial match against the Brisbane Broncos, scoring a try in the Storm's win. While playing for Brisbane's Norths Devils in the 2005 Queensland Cup, Inglis scored 12 tries in five games and had already become the subject of a custody battle between Queensland and New South Wales over which state he would play State of Origin for. He scored 194 points for the Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup. Inglis made his NRL Premiership debut at eighteen years of age as a replacement to injured winger Jake Webster in Melbourne's match against the Parramatta Eels, scoring a try in a 14–26 loss.

Inglis would go on to play a month later at fullback, against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, scoring another try. He played at fullback when Billy Slater was on Origin duty, or at wing or the bench as he slowly solidified himself in the Storm side. At the 2005 Dally M Awards Inglis was nominated for the Rookie of the Year, but lost to Parramatta's Tim Smith.

The Storm went on to reach the finals that season and in a playoff match against Brisbane, Inglis got his first experience in finals football. With the game still in the balance, Billy Slater was helped from the field with an ankle injury and Inglis replaced him. After being on the field for five minutes, he crossed the Broncos' line untouched to score the match-winning try.

Unfortunately for the Storm, they lost in the Semi-Finals to the North Queensland Cowboys 16–24, ending their season.

2006: Breakthrough season

Season 2006 saw Inglis continue to play primarily in the fullback role as his counterpart Billy Slater was suspended after he began the season at centre. He was chosen as goalkicker for the Storm after the departure of Matt Orford, but the role was given to Cameron Smith after Inglis kicked just 1 from 5 against the New Zealand Warriors. After scoring 9 tries in 9 games, he was selected in the starting line up in the Queensland State of Origin team.

His selection in the Queensland squad (along with teammate Israel Folau) caused some controversy. Inglis was born and raised in Bowraville, New South Wales, and played his first senior football in NSW (in the Arrive Alive Cup). League statistician David Middleton believed that Inglis should be playing for NSW. The matter was resolved when the ARL gave Inglis the green light to play for Queensland, because it ruled that his first senior football was at Wavell High. However, later investigations revealed that Inglis played his first senior game for Newcastle's Hunter Sports High School at the age of 16, and is therefore technically not eligible to play for Queensland. However, Inglis went on to begin his State of Origin career with the Maroons. A few early errors were soon forgotten when Inglis scored two tries and saved one. Unfortunately for Inglis, this was not enough for Queensland to win the match.

In the game after his brilliant Origin debut, Inglis suffered a back injury against the Sydney Roosters. This injury kept him out for two months, effectively making him miss the rest of the Origin series. It was around this time that Inglis signed for the Storm for a further four seasons, keeping him at the club until 2010. The deal was worth about $2 million, making him the richest teenager in Rugby League. On return, Inglis returned to the centre position and was an important factor in the Storm winning the 2006 Minor Premiership. The Storm cruised through the finals, beating the Parramatta Eels 12–6, and the St. George Illawarra Dragons 24–10, and eventually met the Brisbane Broncos in the 2006 NRL Grand Final, which was won by the Broncos, 15–8. Inglis finished the season with 18 tries and 2 goals, an effort which earned him selection in the Australian team for the 2006 Tri-Nations series.

Inglis scored four tries in his opening three tests against New Zealand and England and featured in the Final win over New Zealand, 16–12.

2007: Move to five-eighth and Premiership success

In 2007, Inglis was switched primarily to five-eighth; his form at five-eighth was often criticized. In the opening month of the 2007 NRL Season, Inglis failed to score a try. He sustained a knee injury against the Newcastle Knights which kept him out of the 2007 ANZAC Test. Despite not scoring at five-eighth, Inglis was selected for the Queensland State of Origin team for the 2007 State of Origin series, playing on the wing. In Game I, he scored 2 tries in Queensland's 25–18 come-from-behind victory.

Inglis finally scored his first try of 2007 in Round 12, against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He was again selected to play on the wing for his state, and scored in Queensland's 10–6 win, which gave Queensland their second consecutive Origin series victory. Despite scoring 3 tries in 2 games on the wing for QLD, Storm coach Craig Bellamy kept pursuing Inglis as a five-eighth. Inglis scored his first double for the NRL Season against the North Queensland Cowboys. In Game III of the Origin series, Inglis injured a ligament in his knee after just 22 minutes, and as a result missed 2 weeks of action. QLD ultimately lost the game, 18–4, but had already wrapped up the series.

Following his return, Inglis and the Storm focused on the finals. The Storm suffered their third loss of 2007 in Round 20 against a Brad Fittler coached Sydney Roosters side. Following this, the Storm remained undefeated for the rest of the season, winning their second consecutive Minor Premiership.

In the finals, the Storm got redemption from the heartbreaking 2006 loss after beating the Brisbane Broncos 40–0 in the Qualifying Final, eliminating them from the competition for 2007. They defeated the Parramatta Eels 26–10 in what turned out to be Timana Tahu's last game before switching to Rugby Union. In the 2007 NRL Grand Final, the Storm faced off against the Manly Sea Eagles, who finished second. After a 10–4 lead at halftime and an untimely injury to Brett Stewart, the Storm blew Manly off the park, winning 34–8. Inglis scored two tries and as a result was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal.

Inglis also played in the one-off test at the end of the year. Inglis scored a hat-trick in Australia's record breaking 58–0 thrashing of New Zealand.

Later that year, Inglis was selected as a Centre in the Storm's "team of the decade" to celebrate their ten year anniversary.

2008: Third Grand Final and representative success

Inglis had shoulder surgery in the 2007–2008 off-season, and consequently missed the opening 2 rounds of the 2008 NRL Season. He returned in the Round 3 clash with the Sydney Roosters, which the Storm lost 10–6, giving them their first consecutive losses since Round 3 and 4 of the 2006 NRL Season (they lost to the Cronulla Sharks the previous week). Over the next month, Inglis featured the Storm's wins over Brisbane Broncos, Grand Final opponents Manly Sea Eagles, Canberra Raiders and North Queensland Cowboys.

Inglis was selected in the Australian team for the historical Centenary Test against New Zealand. Inglis provided a historical moment, by amazingly hitting the ball into the field of play to provide Mark Gasnier with a try. Australia won 28–12. Inglis was selected to play for Queensland for the 2008 State of Origin series in the centres. He was in Queensland's Game I loss to New South Wales, 18–10. In Game II, he had a brilliant performance, setting up two tries for Darius Boyd as QLD won 30–0.

Around this time, Sonny Bill Williams walked out of the Bulldogs and joined French Rugby Union side RC Toulonnais, despite being contracted with the Dogs until 2012. This move was believed to be instigated by Khoder Nassar, who is also the manager of former 3-time World Champion boxer Anthony Mundine, who walked out of the St. George Illawarra Dragons in 2000. Inglis, who is family friends with both Mundine and Nassar, was rumoured to be on the verge of walking out of the Storm and joining Super 14 side the Western Force, despite being contracted until 2010. However, Inglis stayed loyal to the Storm and extended his contract until 2012.

In a match against the North Queensland Cowboys, Inglis scored his first hat-trick since Round 5, 2006, as the Storm won 48–20. In Game III of the Origin series, QLD won 16–10, getting their third consecutive series win. Despite having a solid series, Inglis failed to score during the Origin campaign. In the final 7 games of season, Inglis scored 11 tries as the Storm won their third consecutive Minor Premiership. At the 2008 Dally M Awards, Inglis was named Five-Eighth of the Year and Representative Player of the Year, as well as winning the Headline Moment of the Year for his brilliant assist to Mark Gasnier in the 2008 Centenary Test.

In the finals, the Storm lost 15–18 to the 8th place New Zealand Warriors, becoming the first 1st placed team to lose an 8th place team. In the Semi-Finals, the Storm faced the Brisbane Broncos. In a brilliant match, Inglis scored with 56 seconds remaining to give the Storm a 16–14 victory. The Storm easily beat the Cronulla Sharks, 28–0, to qualify to another Grand Final. However, they lost in a record breaking 40–0 clash with the Manly Sea Eagles, failing to retain their Premiership.

In August 2008, Inglis was named in the preliminary 46-man Kangaroos squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

Inglis was confirmed in the final 24-man Australia squad to compete in the World Cup at the end of the 2008 season. He scored in Australia's 30–6 win over New Zealand, and a hat-trick in their 52–4 win over England. He also scored in the Semi-Final win over Fiji, before Australia surprisingly lost the Final, 34–20, against New Zealand. Inglis scored 6 tries in 4 games for the tournament, and scored in every match he played for the tournament.

2009: Dual Premiership success (later stripped) and Golden Boot Award

At the start of the 2009 season Inglis attracted a lot of attention due to how much weight he'd gained since the previous season, having bulked from 99 kg up to 110 kg, making him one of the biggest players in the game. He scored the first try of the season for 2009 against St George Illawarra as well as being one of the best on ground. He scored the match winning field goal to win the game for the Storm, 17–16. In doing so, he had not only ruined Wayne Bennett's last game in charge of the Brisbane Broncos but also his first game coaching the St George Illawarra Dragons, by scoring the match winning point.

The Storm had a shaky start to the season, going by a win-loss pattern until Round 7, which they drew with the New Zealand Warriors. They extracted Grand Final revenge on Premiers Manly, with Inglis scoring. During this time, Storm coach Craig Bellamy experimented by putting Cameron Smith at five-eighth, Inglis back in the centres and Ryan Hinchcliffe at hooker. However, after Brett Finch was released by the Parramatta Eels, the Storm signed him and made him their first choice five-eighth, putting Inglis back at his preferred centres position.

He was selected for Australia in the one-off test match against New Zealand on 8 May 2009. This selected was unique, as Inglis was part of an all-Queensland backline, including Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Justin Hodges, Israel Folau, Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston. This feat had not been achieved since 1924. Australia won 38–10, with the superstar backline scoring all the points, proving Queensland's recent dominance.

In April 2009, he was named in the preliminary 25-man squad to represent Queensland in the opening State of Origin match for 2009, and was subsequently picked at centre for the opening State of Origin match. In Game I, Inglis scored 2 tries, as Queensland won 28–18. Meanwhile, the Storm maintained their position in the Top 4 of the NRL competition.

In Game II, Inglis scored again as Queensland recorded a 24–14 win over New South Wales, becoming the first team to win 4 consecutive Origin series. In Game II, Inglis was taken off the field in the first half after receiving a punch to the face from Trent Barrett, but still played against the Canberra Raiders that weekend in which he scored.

In Game III, New South Wales won 28–16, in a game that featured a memorable brawl in the 79th minute. Inglis received the Wally Lewis Medal for player of the series that year in recognition of his efforts during the 2009 State of Origin.

After Karmichael Hunt shockingly signed with the new AFL club the Gold Coast, Inglis revealed he wouldn't mind "having a crack" at AFL. This created concern that Inglis may make a switch, but Inglis made it clear on the Footy Show that he will fulfill his contract with the Melbourne Storm. Inglis was arrested at his home in August for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. The Storm suspended Inglis indefinitely until he was cleared.

After his court hearing was postponed to October, Inglis made his comeback against the Sydney Roosters, scoring a double in the Storm's final game at Olympic Park. Inglis also scored in the Storm's 30–0 win over the New Zealand Warriors as they finished 4th for the season. At the 2009 Dally M Awards Inglis was named centre of the year and representative player of the year.

In the finals, the Storm comfortably defeated Premiers Manly 40–12, before defeating the Brisbane Broncos 40–10, in which Inglis scored a hat-trick. The Storm qualified for their fourth consecutive Grand Final, against the Parramatta Eels. Ironically, the Eels were the last team to make it to four consecutive Grand Finals in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984.

In the 2009 NRL Grand Final against the Parramatta Eels, Inglis scored a try from a Cooper Cronk bomb and kicked a final field goal in the Storm's 23–16 win. From this victory, Inglis become a dual-premiership player (which was eventually stripped) as the Storm capped off their dominance by winning their second premiership in three years.

Post-season he travelled with the Kangaroos to Europe to play in the 2009 Four Nations tournament. He played in the 20 all draw with New Zealand, and scored in a 26–16 win over England. He also scored in the 46–16 Final win over England and was named player of the series in the Four nations final.

Inglis also claimed the Golden Boot Award for the best rugby league player in the world. In December 2009 Inglis won his state's major sporting award by being named "Sport Star of the Year" at the Queensland Sports Awards, becoming the first footballer of any code to win it.

2010: Salary cap drama

Although selected for the Indigenous All Stars side to face the NRL All Stars in the inaugural All Stars match on 13 February, Inglis was ruled out due to a hip injury. He recovered in time to play for the Storm in their victory over the Super League champions Leeds Rhinos in the 2010 World Club Challenge which the Storm won, 18–10. On 19 April 2010, against rivals the Manly Sea Eagles, Inglis injured his ankle but was later ruled to have not suffered a serious injury, continued his playing duties. The Storm subsequently lost 16–18, their first back to back losses of the season, and their last game before the salary cap drama unfolded. ‎

It was revealed that the Storm had been breaching the salary cap since 2005, and were subsequently stripped of their NRL Premiership victories in 2007 and 2009. They were also stripped of their 2006, 2007 and 2008 Minor Premiership trophies. Finally, the were unable to obtain any competition points from the 2010 NRL Season, meaning they will inevitably get the wooden spoon, the first in the club's history. Inglis was still allowed to continue to be recognised as the Clive Churchill Medallist from the 2007 Grand Final.

In Round 10, Inglis scored a personal best 16 points, with 3 tries and 2 goals against the Canberra Raiders. In doing so, he brought his career try tally to 72 tries, overtaking Marcus Bai to become the 3rd highest tryscorer for the Melbourne Storm, behind retired legend Matt Geyer and current teammate Billy Slater. In Game I of the 2010 State of Origin series, Inglis scored a try in Queensland's 28–24 win as they look to achieve a 5th straight series win.

In the lead up to Origin II, Inglis was the subject of a racial comment made by NSW Assistant Coach Andrew Johns, which led to NSW winger Timana Tahu walk out of camp. This triggered Inglis to have a big Game II, scoring the opening try and engaging in a brawl with debutant Beau Scott. This 34–6 victory to Queensland gave them their record fifth straight series win. Inglis continued his strong week, scoring 10 points (1 try, 3 goals) in the Storm's 58–12 thrashing of the North Queensland Cowboys. QLD achieved their first series whitewash since 1995, and the first of Origin since 2000, to cap off their fifth consecutive series win, winning a thrilling 23–18 encounter.

In the wake of the salary cap problems at the Storm, Inglis' future at the club after 2010 became uncertain. Many clubs from four football codes (rugby league, rugby union, American football and Australian rules) pursued him. Clubs included the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Catalans Dragons, Essendon Football Club and New York Jets. On 10 August 2010, Inglis signed with the Brisbane Broncos for the 2011 and 2012 NRL seasons in a deal worth $1.2 million. The Broncos had released a key player in Israel Folau who joined AFL club GWS, which freed up the funds necessary to secure Inglis' services. Inglis' girlfriend Sally Robinson was living and working in Brisbane, a factor which is said to have helped Inglis make his decision to sign with the Broncos.

On 1 September 2010, the Broncos ordered Inglis to have a shoulder reconstruction in the 2010–2011 off-season. This caused Inglis to miss the end of year Four Nations. In his final game for the Storm, against the Newcastle Knights, Inglis scored 2 tries as the Storm won 34–4. The win sent off several players who were leaving the club at the end of 2010 due to the salary cap drama.

Brisbane Broncos

On 24 October 2010, the Storm revealed that Inglis owes the Melbourne Storm $113,000 worth of legal fees following his 2009 assault charge. A week later, the South Sydney Rabbitohs made an offer to Inglis. Inglis missed the Broncos first training session of the 2010–2011 pre-season on 1 November, citing bad weather in Sydney, where he was staying, as the reason. Two days later, future Broncos team-mate Justin Hodges criticised the treatment of Inglis, saying Inglis is considering walking out of rugby league. On 5 November, the Broncos gave Inglis a 24-hour deadline to sign with the club. On 6 November, after Inglis failed to reach Brisbane, the Broncos pulled out of signing Inglis, leaving him without a club for 2011 and beyond. Inglis also received an offer from French rugby club Toulon, backing up Hodges' claim that Inglis may walk out of rugby league.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

On 8 November, it was revealed Inglis would most likely sign with the Rabbitohs. Influences for Inglis's shock move to Redfern included Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe, Inglis's close friend Anthony Mundine, Inglis's cousin Beau Champion and billionaire Andrew Forrest. On 12 November, Inglis signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 NRL Seasons. The deal was worth $1.8 million. Inglis attended his first training session on 15 November. However, third-party deals totaling $200,000 had to be included within South Sydney's salary cap which placed the Rabbits over the NRL salary cap. The deal was not officially approved by the NRL, the Melbourne Storm or the NRL's auditor, Ian Schubert. By 18 December, no deal had been solidified with the Rabbitohs, putting Inglis's NRL career into doubt. According to reports, Schubert refused to accept the contract signed with the Rabbitohs, leaving Inglis to consider leaving the NRL. Inglis soon met with AFL clubs St. Kilda and Essendon.

On 24 December, it was officially announced that Inglis had signed the contract with the Rabbitohs for three seasons, ironically at the expense of cousin Beau Champion, who signed with Melbourne Storm for the same period of time.

2011: Debut season with Rabbitohs

Inglis was named in the Indigenous All-Stars side for the second annual NRL All-Stars game. However, his off-season surgery forced him to miss both the All-Stars game for the second consecutive year, as well as the annual Charity Shield game between Souths and reigning NRL Premiers St. George Illawarra Dragons. Inglis made his Rabbitohs debut on the opening night of the 2011 NRL Season scoring a try in a 29–40 loss to traditional rivals the Sydney Roosters. Inglis picked up his first win as a member of the Rabbitohs in a 32–18 victory of the Parramatta Eels in Round 3.

The Rabbitohs struggled in the early stages of the season, registering just 3 victories in the opening 8 weeks. Despite the signing of former Storm assistant coach Michael Maguire, who Inglis knows very well, as their coach for 2012 and beyond, the Rabbitohs have to deal with England international Sam Burgess being ruled out for the season, as well as the news of halfback Chris Sandow signing for the Parramatta Eels for 2012. Also, due to the injury of Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi, Inglis became front-runner to assume captaincy of the club.

Inglis was selected for the 2011 ANZAC Test, despite his inconsistent form. He was injured in the opening 10 minutes of the game with a hip injury. Australia went on to win 20–10. The injury, however, proved more serious than first thought, and consequently Inglis was ruled out of Game One of the 2011 State of Origin series. He made his return to take on his former club, the Melbourne Storm, in a 16–6 loss. He returned to the Maroons side in a Game II loss to NSW. After some unfamiliar poor form by Inglis in Origin Game II, Inglis scored the first try in a double in the Game III decider victory. The double allowed Inglis to equal the Queensland try-scoring record held by Dale Shearer.

Controversy

In early 2008, Inglis was involved in two separate night club incidents. The first occurred during the Storm's preparations for the 2008 World Club Challenge. Inglis was injured and ruled out of the game. He acted as a peacemaker during the incident. The second, he reacted verbally to a man who insulted his girlfriend.

On 10 August 2009, Inglis was charged with recklessly causing injury and the unlawful assault of his girlfriend Sally Robinson the previous day, and was indefinitely suspended from playing with the Melbourne Storm. Inglis was cleared to return to play with the Melbourne Storm by the club's board and the NRL on 27 August.

Inglis pleaded not guilty to the charges, with the case adjourned for a contest hearing on 12 April 2010.

The affair ended in April 2010 when Inglis avoided an assault conviction, accepting a diversion order.

He was also one of four Melbourne Storm players (the others being Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater) who were said to be involved in the club's salary cap rorting which saw them stripped of their two premierships and three minor premierships. Despite this, Inglis will still be recognised as the Clive Churchill Medallist in 2007 (the first of two titles the Storm have been stripped of), as will Billy Slater for 2009.

On Friday, 11 June 2010, Timana Tahu walked out of the New South Wales Origin camp, which was cited as "personal reasons". On 12 June, however, it was revealed that Tahu walked because of racial comments made by NSW Assistant Coach Andrew Johns. It was later revealed the comments were directed at Inglis, as Johns was talking about him with NSW debutant Beau Scott, who faced off with Inglis in Game II. On 13 June, Tahu revealed that Inglis was not the only target of the racial comments. On 24 June, Inglis said that Johns should be banned from any further involvement in the game of rugby league. In July 2010, Inglis reportedly accepted an apology from Johns.

In August 2010, after the Storm agreed to release Inglis after the 2010 NRL Season, Inglis announced he will join the Brisbane Broncos. By October 2010, no contract with the Broncos had been signed, due to the Storm refusing to release Inglis, who owed the club $113,000 worth of legal fees. On 2 November, Inglis assured Broncos CEO Bruno Cullen he will play for the Broncos in 2011, and repeated the same act on 5 November. By 6 November, the Broncos had pulled out of signing Inglis after he failed to sign with the club within a 24-hour deadline. Inglis's inability to sign with the Broncos has been criticised by Cullen, who claims Inglis "betrayed" the Broncos. On 12 November, Inglis signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Personal life

In October 2005, Inglis began a relationship with Sally Robinson. The couple split in December 2008, and Inglis began a publicised relationship with notorious cougar Charmyne Pavali. The affair ended later that month. Inglis and Robinson reunited in March 2009. In August 2009, Inglis was arrested for causing reckless assault towards Robinson. Robinson moved back to Brisbane. Inglis and Robinson reunited a second time in October 2009, amidst Inglis's assault charges. In April 2010, the case ended with Inglis accepting a diversion order, avoiding an assault conviction. In June 2010, Inglis announced his engagement to Robinson. Inglis and Robinson married on 5 December 2010 at the Twin Waters Resort in Maroochydore.

Fabio Capello (born 18 June 1946) is an Italian football manager and former player. He is the current manager of the England national football team.

Capello has the distinction of winning the domestic league title with every club he has coached throughout his career. In his first five seasons as a manager he won four Serie A titles with Milan, where he also won the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League, defeating Barcelona 4–0 in a memorable final. He then spent a year at Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga title at his first attempt, and in 2001 led Roma to their first league title in 18 years. Capello also won two titles at Juventus (which were later stripped after the Calciopoli scandal), and in 2006 returned to Real Madrid, where he won another La Liga title. Overall he has won a major league championship in seven (or nine, counting the two revoked titles with Juventus) of his 16 seasons as a coach, and is one of the few managers to claim championship victories in four major European cities: Milan, Madrid, Rome, and Turin.

After being appointed England manager in December 2007, Capello announced that the role would be the last of his career. Capello's contract with the Football Association came into effect on 7 January 2008, and was initially planned to run for two-and-a-half years; on 24 January 2008, Capello was named president of the League Managers Association, a customary role given to the English national coach. In May 2010 it was announced that Capello's contract had been extended to 2012, though Capello stated he would leave the post after Euro 2012

Early life

He was born in San Canzian d'Isonzo near Gorizia, in north-eastern Italy, in what was then the Allied-occupied Zone A of the Julian March. His uncle Mario Tortul was the football player , who played for Triestina, Padova, Sampdoria and the Italian national football team in the 1960s.

Club career

A midfielder, Capello first played as a youth for his local club side (Pieris in the land of Bisiacaria, between Isonzo and Timavo) which was coached by his father, Guerrino. He was signed by Paolo Mazza, the President of SPAL, for the fee of two million lire despite interest from AC Milan. In his second season in the youth team he helped the club win the Italian Youth Championship and made his first-team debut against Sampdoria on 29 March 1964. He made four appearances for a struggling side that was relegated from Serie A giving him experience of both success and failure in the same season. After returning to the top division at the first attempt, Capello became a key player in the 1965–66 season, taking penalties and helping them avoiding a swift return to Serie B. He was also called up to the Italian Under-23 side along with teammate Edy Reja. However, injury to his left knee restricted him to just sixteen appearances the following season.In 1967, he moved to Roma where he became a key player for the club. In his first season, he helped them to first place after eight matches, including scoring the winner in a 10–9 victory over Juventus. However, a recurrence of the injury to his left knee kept him out for the rest of the season and Roma eventually finished in tenth place, just 5 points away from relegation. The following season, under new manager Helenio Herrera, a fit Capello scored 6 goals as Roma finished 8th and won his first major trophy, the Coppa Italia. This qualified Roma to play the Anglo-Italian League Cup, where they played Swindon Town who had beaten Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup. Capello played in both legs against Swindon, Roma winning 2–1 at home in the first leg but losing 4–0 in the second leg at The County Ground, his first taste of football in England. He was then sold to Juventus, where he was a mainstay in the 1970s. Juventus were the dominant Italian team of the decade, and he won the ''Serie A'' three times with the club. Capello ended his career as player with Milan in 1980, having won his fourth ''Serie A'' with the club in 1979.

Italian national team

Capello also played thirty-two times for Italy; he is particularly remembered for a goal with which Italy beat England 1–0 at Wembley for the first time in its history (14 November 1973), which he himself regarded as the highlight of his playing career. Capello scored the lone goal for Italy against Poland during the 1974 FIFA World Cup though Italy lost the match 2-1 and failed to qualify for the second round of the competition. He was overlooked for the 1978 FIFA World Cup even after having good club form with Milan. The manager of then, Enzo Bearzot preferred other defensive minded midfielders such as Marco Tardelli over the attacking minded Capello.

After several years as a football pundit for Italian TV SPW and a brief spell as caretaker manager of AC Milan in 1987, he became a leading candidate to succeed Arrigo Sacchi as coach of the team, and he was formally appointed as manager of AC Milan in 1991.

Coaching career

Before going into management, Fabio spent a couple of seasons from 1987 to 1989 being a coach with Italian side Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio and manager Emiliano Mondonico, a personal friend.

Managerial career

A student at Coverciano, in 1984 he penned a research article entitled "The Zonal Marking System".

First spell at Milan

His first experience was leading Milan in the last five games of the 1986/87 Serie A season, replacing Nils Liedholm and achieving the UEFA Cup qualifications in a play-off with Sampdoria. However, the following season, Arrigo Sacchi became the new ''Rossoneri'' manager and Capello stepped aside, but still worked for the society.

Capello made his second and best remembered coaching experience in the early 1990s again with Milan, replacing Sacchi and leading a team including the likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Paolo Maldini, and Franco Baresi to four Serie A titles in five years with a team nicknamed ''"The Invincibles"''. Milan were at this time bankrolled by the vast wealth of the Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi. Under Capello, Milan remained unbeaten for 58 league games between 19 May 1991 and 21 March 1993, which included an entire season where they were unbeaten in the league. They were finally defeated 1–0 by Parma after a goal from Faustino Asprilla.

With a style that spurned the traditional Italian stereotype of ''Catenaccio'', in 1994 Milan routed the favourites FC Barcelona 4–0 to win the UEFA Champions League, earning them a reputation of one of the great sides of the modern era. Although Milan lost the Serie A title in 1995—finishing a disappointing fourth—Capello signed off from his six-year stint with the ''Rossoneri'' by regaining the league championship the following year. He was replaced by Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabárez who was sacked after only a few games.

By now, Capello had earned himself a reputation as one of Europe's leading coaches. He had also become known as a disciplinarian, unafraid of clamping down on his players, even his leading stars, if he felt they were not pulling their weight for the team. Towards the end of his time at Milan, he had clashed with player Paolo Di Canio who was subsequently sold to Glasgow Celtic.

First spell at Real Madrid

Capello was unveiled as the new Real Madrid coach. A major task was combining the attacking talents of Davor Šuker, Predrag Mijatović and Raúl in a single team, which Capello did by playing a three-man attack, in spite of his reputation for cautious and defensive football. He had a single season in charge of Real guiding the club to the Spanish league title in 1997. Real managed to edge out their bitter rivals FC Barcelona by just two points.

Despite his tenure with ''Los Merengues'' lasting only a year, he was credited with bringing in a number of players such as Šuker , Mijatović, Roberto Carlos and Clarence Seedorf who helped the club establish their Champions League dominance over the next few years.

Second spell at Milan

Despite a belief by the Lazio owner Sergio Cragnotti that Capello had made a verbal agreement to coach his club, Capello instead returned to Milan for a brief and less successful spell. Some of the previous squad had departed, and others such as Franco Baresi were coming to the end of their careers. The squad had to be extensively rebuilt, and many of the new signings did not gel. The team managed to win just 11 games all season, with a particular low occurring in March 1998 when they lost 4–1 to Juventus and Capello was sent off for protesting a decision to the referee followed by a 5–0 defeat to Roma in May. Milan finished the Serie A 1997-98 season in 10th place, 30 points behind the champions Juventus, by which time Capello had already departed the club. Some of the players suggested that Capello had instituted a more lax training regime than he had in his previous spell. A run in the Italian Cup ended when Milan were beaten in the final by Lazio 3–2 on aggregate, despite taking a 1–0 lead in the first leg. Capello took credit for Milan's title win the following season claiming, as he had rebuilt the side, that it was "my team".

Managing Roma

Following his dismissal at Milan, Capello took a short break from coaching. He told a reporter that he "sat on a beach and thought about football". He also enjoyed a spell as a color commentator for Italian television, participating in coverage of the Copa America 1999. In May 1999 he moved to Roma, the club he had first joined as a player thirty years before. His arrival was hailed by the Roma President, Franco Sensi, who said "Capello is a winner and I believe in him". Capello was joined by Franco Baldini who became the club's Sporting Director. Capello built his side around Marco Delvecchio, sometimes leaving Vincenzo Montella on the bench. Believing his squad lacked a world-class striker, Capello made a move to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy, but the deal was wrecked following a serious injury. His first season saw Roma finish 6th, made particularly disappointing as cross-city rivals Lazio won the title, and they were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Leeds United.

Capello's breakthrough at the club occurred when he won the 2001 Serie A, having signed Walter Samuel to strengthen his defence and Gabriel Batistuta as a goalscorer. Although the large fee for Batistuta was questioned, the Argentinian scored a number of vital goals. The season began in difficult fashion with Roma struggling for form and an angry fans protest at the club's Trigoria training complex which turned violent when players cars were attacked. Capello resisted calls for his resignation, and the team's results dramatically improved helped by the performances of the Brazilian midfielder Emerson. The title was sealed with a 3–0 victory over Parma at the Stadio Olimpico prompting a major pitch invasion by the Roma supporters. That was Roma's first major honour in a decade and only the third ever time they had been crowned Champions of Italy. Capello was praised for fielding Montella, a player he had had a bust-up with just days before, in the final match of the season.

Following the title win there was also a widespread belief that he had done a secret deal to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. Ferguson had announced his decision to retire, with Capello a leading candidate to replace him allegedly going so far as to meet with the Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards. Capello did little to dispel the rumours when he remarked "I like the spirit of English football and I would like to work in English football" adding that it was an honour to be pursued by the club. Capello's link with United eventually came to nothing after Ferguson abandoned his decision to retire and signed a new contract, with Martin Edwards claiming that United had been three or four days away from appointing a new manager, believed to be Capello, when Ferguson changed his mind.

The 2002 season developed into a battle between Roma and Juventus. After a heated encounter between the teams, Capello used an interview to criticise the Moggi family that ran Juventus, particularly their dealings with players agents. Capello signed a new contract in April 2002, worth £2.37m a season. The defence of the title was dealt a major blow when the club drew with bottom-placed Venezia, as Roma finished second in the table behind Juventus by a single point. The following season Roma failed to maintain a serious challenge, and finished in eighth. Their Champions League ambitions were also ended following a defeat and a draw against Arsenal which saw them finish bottom of their group. Once again it had been English opposition that had thwarted Roma in Europe. Roma lost the Italian Cup final to A.C Milan, with Capello particularly angered by supporters who waved banners calling on him to go. Capello's final year at Roma, began well with the team playing much better football. They went on a seven game winning streak before Christmas, including comfortable victories over Juventus and Inter Milan. This led to speculation linking him with Juventus, despite his past differences with Luciano Moggi. Capello believed he had taken Roma as far as he could, and began to seriously considered a move. In the run-in the club's form dipped and they ended up finishing eleven points behind champions A.C. Milan.

Juventus

In 2004, Capello left debt-ridden Roma to sign with Juventus. His move came as a surprise, because he had kept it such a secret, and because he had been engaged in a war of words with the Moggi family. When Capello broke the news that he was joining Juventus, Franco Baldini believed he was joking. One of Capello's first moves was to sign Emerson from Roma, further angering many of his critics who believed he had betrayed Roma. Juventus won the 2004–05 and 2005–06 ''Scudetto'' under Capello's leadership, but were later stripped of their trophies due to involvement in the Italian match-fixing scandal. The scandal engulfed the Turin club, and in 2006 they were relegated to Serie B by the authorities.

In July 2006, with Juventus in the midst of the aforementioned match-fixing scandal, Capello resigned as Juventus manager. Press reports strongly linked him with a move back to Real Madrid; new club president Ramón Calderón had publicly stated his hope that Capello would return for a second stint at the club and on 5 July 2006, the official Real Madrid website announced Capello's appointment.

Capello was criticised by Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero, whilst leading players Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson also left for Real Madrid, with some believing that Capello had privately persuaded the players to follow him. In the wake of the club's enforced relegation, Juventus were struggling to hang on to their leading players.

Second spell at Real Madrid

Capello arrived at a Real Madrid side suffering one of the longest spells without a trophy in their history. He quickly drew the disdain of Real's ardent supporters because of his defensive playing style. In interviews, Capello responded to those critics by saying that the beauty of attacking plays was old. He said that results were much more important than playing beautifully. He also added that "those days are over." His remit was to bring the title back to Madrid, a task that had been too much for five other coaches since 2003. In Spain, he was commonly referred to as ''"Don Fabio"''. At Real Madrid, Capello had several high-profile falling outs. He was criticised for not playing David Beckham because of his contract wranglings and Ronaldo, who struggled for fitness and form. Capello also feuded with his compatriot Antonio Cassano; the two had previously had disputes at Roma.

In March, Real were again eliminated early from the Champions League and were mired in fourth place in the league, six points behind FC Barcelona. On 20 February 2007, Real Madrid were forced to deny rumours that Capello would be leaving after that day's match.

Despite the unrest, Capello recalled Beckham, whose return was pivotal for the team's recovery. A string of successful results in the latter half of the season took Real to the top of the table, while Barça's results became inconsistent. Real Madrid won their 30th league title on the final day of the season by beating RCD Mallorca 3–1 at home. The victory was achieved after Capello substituted an injured Beckham and brought on José Antonio Reyes. Real had been 1–0 down prior to the substitution and Reyes turned the match scoring two goals. Despite winning La Liga, Capello was sacked on 28 June 2007 due to Real's pragmatic style of play at a club with recent memories of the individualistic and free-flowing, but ultimately unsuccessful ''Galáctico'' era.

England

Appointment

After the dismissal of Steve McClaren following the failure of England to qualify for UEFA Euro 2008, Capello was linked, together with several other managers such as José Mourinho, Marcello Lippi, and Martin O'Neill to the England national team position; he then admitted that he was interested in the job.

After Mourinho ruled himself out as a potential candidate for the position, the media immediately labelled Capello as the new favourite. Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, and Rafael Benítez then voiced their support for Capello and the news that Capello had backed out of long-held TV commitments with Italian state broadcaster RAI further confirmed Capello as the favourite to be England boss. It was initially mentioned that Capello's poor English skills might rule him out of the position, but the Football Association stated that this was not so. He was formally appointed as England manager on 14 December 2007, and commenced his day-to-day role on 7 January 2008, on a four-and-a-half year deal. It is estimated that his annual pay is £6 million. After being confirmed for the job, he announced it would be his last in football. Capello announced on the day of his unveiling that it was a dream come true to manage the England national team and that he hoped to learn the English language in the following month prior to his first official meeting with the players.

Capello was welcomed by many English fans and the press who hailed his appointment as a triumph, citing in particular his impressive trophy haul and his reputation as a disciplinarian in contrast to the excessive leniency perceived to have existed under his two predecessors. For example he would later strip John Terry of the captaincy he had generally held for over a year after a scandal, in February 2010. He also referred to the members of the England team as "rich boys" and said each member needed to sacrifice something during the World Cup. In Italy, news of his appointment was greeted with a sense of pride that one of their countrymen had been selected to coach an elite European team. Equally, his arrival has generated some criticism, notably from FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who said, ''"I would say it is a little surprising that the motherland of football has ignored a sacrosanct law or belief that the national team manager should be from the same country as the players."'' The Italian led England to the World Cup winning 9 out of the ten qualifying games, winning all their home games and only losing to Ukraine, with qualification having been secured, in October 2009.

Friendlies

2008

England's first match with Capello as manager was at Wembley against Switzerland on 6 February 2008. Much of the speculation approaching the game had centred on whether Capello would award David Beckham his 100th international cap. Another aspect that generated a lot of interest was Capello's choice of captain. Several regular starters under Steve McClaren admitted they were uncertain of their future selection. On 31 January 2008, it was confirmed that a number of senior players including Sol Campbell and Beckham had not been selected for Capello's debut squad, with the Italian citing 'fitness reasons' for dropping former captain Beckham, who had not played a professional game since 21 November 2007. After recent erratic form, Paul Robinson also missed out on the squad. Debut call-ups were handed to two players: Curtis Davies and Gabriel Agbonlahor, both of Aston Villa. Capello decided to give the captain's armband to Steven Gerrard for his first game in charge, beginning his rotation policy.

Jermaine Jenas scored Capello's first goal as England manager in the 40th minute against Switzerland at Wembley. Shaun Wright-Phillips restored the lead after the 61st minute, shortly after coming on as a substitute. After a slow start, England won the game 2–1, handing Capello his first victory in his first game as England manager. He was warmly welcomed by the England fans before the game commenced.

For his second game in charge, an international friendly against France, Capello did finally award Beckham his landmark 100th cap. He also rotated the captaincy, giving the armband to Rio Ferdinand. England lost the game 1–0 after a Franck Ribéry penalty, marking Capello's first defeat as the national coach. Capello's third game in charge was against the United States on 28 May 2008. He named Chelsea's John Terry as the captain for this match. England comfortably won an unremarkable game 2–0.

On 31 May 2008, Capello named David Beckham as captain for the match on 1 June 2008 against Trinidad and Tobago. It was Beckham's first game as captain of England since the 2006 World Cup. England comfortably won the game 3–0. On 19 August 2008, Capello announced that John Terry would be named permanent captain for the second time in his career. On 20 August 2008, England drew 2–2 at Wembley with the Czech Republic.

England rounded off 2008 by beating Germany 2–1 on 19 November. A John Terry header secured the win for England, in the 83rd minute, inflicting the first defeat Germany had suffered in Berlin in 35 years.

2009

In the spring of 2009, England played two more friendlies, losing 2–0 to European champions Spain and beating Slovakia 4–0. In the summer of 2009 England played another friendly against Holland, coming back from 2–0 down to secure a 2–2 draw away from home. Slovenia were beaten 2–1 In Wembley in the same year. In November 2009, England were beaten 1–0 by Brazil in Qatar, Capello's third defeat as England manager.

2010

In March 2010, England played a friendly against Egypt and beat the Africa Cup of Nations holders 3–1. Two months later in the last home match before the World Cup they beat Mexico by the same scoreline.

In May 2010, England played a friendly against Japan at UPC-Arena, Graz and won 2–1. The two goals conceded by Japan were both own goals by Marcus Tanaka and Yuji Nakazawa respectively.

After constant speculation linking him with the vacant managerial post at Inter Milan, on 2 June 2010 Capello committed himself to the England job until at least after the 2012 European Championships.

World Cup 2010

Qualification

England opened Capello's first competitive campaign with a 2–0 victory over Andorra, in Barcelona, on 6 September 2008. Four days later, on 10 September, England played Croatia, the team that had qualified for the previous competition (Euro 2008) at their expense. England won 4–1; Arsenal's Theo Walcott was particularly impressive in scoring three goals. The next qualification game was at Wembley just over a month later, on 11 October, against Kazakhstan. The game remained goalless at half-time, but England went on to win 5–1. A fourth straight win on 15 October made this England's best ever start to a World Cup qualifying campaign as they beat Belarus 3–1.

On 1 April 2009, England beat Ukraine 2–1 at Wembley. On 6 June, they travelled to Almaty to beat Kazakhstan 4–0, and four days later, they returned to Wembley to beat Andorra again 6–0, making it seven wins out of seven in this qualification campaign. A notable feature of the campaign has been the goals of Wayne Rooney: eight in seven games (all in the last six). With two in the friendly against Slovakia in March 2009, Rooney had scored ten goals in his last eight England games.

On 9 September 2009, Capello successfully guided England to qualification to the 2010 World Cup following a 5–1 win at home to Croatia.

Finals

Capello's England drew the first game 1–1 with the United States, after which he declared the tournament Adidas Jabulani ball was "impossible to control". This was followed by a poor display against Algeria leading to a 0–0 draw and widespread criticism of both Capello and the England team. On June 23, Capello led England into the round of 16 of the World Cup after they beat Slovenia 1–0. However they were beaten in their first knockout match 4–1 by Germany.

On 2 July 2010, the Football Association announced that Capello would remain as the manager of the England national team following speculation over his future following the World Cup 2010.

Euro 2012

Qualification

England kicked off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with two wins, 4–0 against Bulgaria and 3–1 away against Switzerland, yet failed to convert a shot against table leaders Montenegro at Wembley. Capello made some changes afterwards, with Ferdinand and Gerrard out of the picture. The traditional 4-4-2 was transformed to 4-3-3 with Darren Bent at top and Rooney as the left forward. The result has been successful thus far, as England beat Wales 2-0 on March 26, 2011. Englands next games was at Wembley against Switzerland on the 4th June 2011, which they drew 2-2, goals from Frank Lampard and Ashley Young helped the three lions receive a point in the last game of the 2010/2011 season.

Personal life

Capello was born in 1946 in San Canzian d'Isonzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia to Guerrino and Evelina Capello. Capello is a devout Catholic who prays twice a day. Both his father, a schoolteacher, and uncle played football, and Capello has spent his entire adult life involved with the sport. He has been married to his wife Laura, whom he first met on a bus as a teenager, for over 40 years. He is represented by his son Pierfilippo, who acts as his agent. It is thought that The Football Association welcomed the stable family life that Capello brings to the job, in contrast to the more colourful antics of his predecessors which served as fodder for the media. However, it has been highlighted that Capello has made a number of controversial comments over the years, such as praising Francisco Franco, and that the FA will be hoping he learns to keep his opinions to himself.

In January 2008, Italian police announced that they were launching an investigation into tax irregularities by Capello. However, the probe has been dismissed as routine by Capello's spokesmen who said this was part of a wider investigation into a number of wealthy Italians. The FA revealed that they had known about the upcoming probe when they had appointed Capello, and expected no charges to be brought.

Art collection

Capello is a self-confessed fine art enthusiast. Over the years, he has acquired a number of works, and his art collection is estimated to be worth £17 million. His favourite artist is reportedly Wassily Kandinsky.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.

The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.

History

The term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to the late 19th Century. In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

It was also used as a term for a drug dealer in the 1950s and 1960s and can be seen in such media as Curtis Mayfield's "No Thing On Me", William Burroughs's novel ''Naked Lunch'', and in the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting for the Man", in which Lou Reed sings about going to Uptown Manhattan, specifically Lexington Avenue and 125th Street, to buy heroin.

The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in ''U.S. News and World Report'', had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine ''Easyriders'' which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."

In present day, the phrase has been popularized in commercials and cinema.

Use as praise

The term has also been used as an approbation or form of praise. This may refer to the recipient's status as the leader or authority within a particular context, or it might be assumed to be a shortened form of a phrase like "He is the man (who is in charge)." One example of this usage dates to 1879 when Otto von Bismarck commented, referring to Benjamin Disraeli's pre-eminent position at the Congress of Berlin, "The old Jew, he is the man."

In more modern usage, it can be a superlative compliment ("you da man!") indicating that the subject is currently standing out amongst his peers even though they have no special designation or rank, such as a basketball player who is performing better than the other players on the court. It can also be used as a genuine compliment with an implied, slightly exaggerated or sarcastic tone, usually indicating that the person has indeed impressed the speaker but by doing something relatively trivial.
